Digital certificate (FNMT) for students: worth it?
Cita prèvia, Autofirma, sede electrónica — the FNMT certificate unlocks a lot of doors. But is it worth the 90-minute setup for a two-year stay?
The FNMT certificado digital is Spain's answer to a personal e-signature. Once installed, you can sign forms, book Extranjería appointments, and file at the sede electrónica without leaving your laptop.
Short answer: yes, it's worth it, even for a two-year stay.
What it unlocks#
- Faster appointments. The Extranjería portal shows you extra slots when you're logged in with a digital certificate.
- File modelo 790-012 online. No printing, no queue at the bank.
- Access to the sede electrónica for tax filings, empadronamiento reprints, and more.
What it costs you (time-wise)#
Roughly 90 minutes end-to-end, split across three sittings:
- Request the certificate online (5 minutes)
- Visit an AEAT or Seguridad Social office to prove your identity (30 minutes + travel)
- Download and install on your machine (15 minutes with Autofirma)
The gotchas#
- Only works on the machine you install it on. Losing your laptop = losing the cert. You can export a backup as a
.pfxfile — do this on day one. - Firefox handles it better than Chrome on macOS.
- Autofirma is required for many forms — install it separately.
If you're staying more than a year, get one. Under a year, the manual paper flow is honestly faster than the setup cost.
