Renewing your TIE is a two-phase process: first you get a renewed authorization (online via Mercurio), then you book a fingerprint appointment for the new card. Start early — appointments take time.
When to use it: Between 60 days before your TIE expires and 90 days after expiration. Do NOT wait until the last week.
Make sure you have these ready — missing any one can send you home from the appointment.

Kick things off at your university's international office: ask for the certificado de matrícula (proof of continued enrollment), the official paid tuition receipt (or scholarship award letter), and your latest transcripts. These take days to produce.
Email Barcelona Activa's BIW desk, follow the auto-reply link to the request form, submit it, and attend the Information Session where a technician installs the FNMT certificate on your laptop.
Pull together the full document set — admission letter, money proof, EX-00, insurance, passport, fee receipt, and more. Missing any one of these can kill the application.
Download and install AutoFirma — the Spanish government's electronic-signature client. Mercurio calls it when you press 'Sign and submit'.
With certificate + AutoFirma + all PDFs ready, sign in to Mercurio and file the application step by step.
Immigration reviews the file and emails you the resolution. Most decisions arrive in 1–3 months. Don't miss the email — it's the only way you'll know.
After approval, reserve your 'Toma de huellas' appointment on the official cita previa portal. Slots are scarce — refresh often.
Bring exactly the 7 items listed on your approval letter. Missing any one of them means the police office sends you home.
Show up at the police office on the date/time from your cita, hand over every document from step 8, get fingerprinted, and walk out with the waiting receipt (resguardo) that lets you pick up your new TIE in ~30–60 days.
30–60 days later, go to the office printed on your resguardo, hand it in with your passport, and walk out with your new TIE. Renewal complete.
